Aerial sling is for EVERYONE

The most common remark we hear when we talk about aerial movement is usually something along the lines of “oh, I could never do that; I have no upper body strength,” or “I’ve never done this before, no way can I learn now,” then a few months later they’re flying like they should’ve been doing this all along.

The silk is such a great tool for building strength, mobility, and confidence; you can use it for for whatever you want.

Movement for Life

These classes are similar to yoga and fitness classes; use the silk to relax in a Zen class or do TRX-work in Fit Flight to build strength. Invert to decompress and stretch. Functional strength and mobility are the cornerstone of these classes, along with a little fun.

Aerial Tricks & Dance

These classes are more similar to circus and dance classes with less emphasis on functional strength/mobility and a hard emphasis on aerial technique so we can do more extreme tricks and sequences in the silk.

We separate our classes so that our community isn’t so worried about class level beyond what it means in terms of safety; at many studios, there can be a subconscious culture of “I’ve got to move up and get to the highest level!” At Chrysalis, we’re more focused on finding what movement works for you and your life in a sustainable way. You’re welcome to focus primarily on our yoga and fitness classes, our aerial-arts-esque track, or bounce between them at the appropriate level.

How to get started

The body only adapts if it has a reason; so let’s give it a reason! The best way to start your journey is with either our Intro to Aerial Hammock/Sling class or a Flight Foundations Workshop. Both our 60 min drop-in class and the 2.5 hour workshop go over basic hammock anatomy, how to move in relation to the anchor point, and how to invert. You are welcome to attend as many intro classes as you like before moving into the Level 2 classes.

Intro to Aerial Hammock/Sling is meant to familiarize you with the apparatus in addition to looking at good alignment in and out of the silk, but we want to encourage folks to move into other classes after they feel comfortable inverting independently and moving with the silk.

Once you feel comfortable in the hammock, it’s easier to move into the classes you like – fitness, zen, dance, tricks, yoga, whatever it is – but we ask that you start with an Intro class if you have zero or little silk experience.

How quickly you move up in level is highly variable and dependent on the individual, and again, if most of your class favorites are Level I, you can still exert a lot of effort. Our class levels are based on your degree of silk fluency rather than effort exerted; this means you can have a super sweaty experience in a Level I fitness class but a chill stretching sequence in a Level III Flow class.
